PLACENTA SERVICES

In recent years, placenta consumption has become more common; people, midwives, and some research may report that there are some benefits. Moreover, a popular method of preparing the placenta for consumption is placenta encapsulation which may be an acceptable sanitized method.

The Association of Placenta Preparation Arts (APPA)'s specialist encapsulators are specially and in-depth trained to provide a safe service that complies with the OSHA and EPA sanitization standards as well as current research.

Dayana Harrison Birth Services has completed the Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Certification for Placenta Encapsulators and is a Placenta Specialist certified with the Association of Placenta Preparation Arts (APPA).

Her equipment is only used for placentas which she processes only one placenta at a time, and she has a rigorous sanitation procedure and placenta processing protocol that complies with the above standards.

PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION

Clients can choose between the two main methods of preparing placenta encapsulation.

I. TRADITIONAL METHOD (TM)

  • Inspired by the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory which believes the body needs help replacing energy and warmth after birth.

  • The placenta is rinsed, steamed for about 40 minutes with herbs, dehydrated at 160 °F for 24 hours, powdered, and put into capsules Specific organic healing and balancing herbs are use

  • Appropriate for GBS+, mood boosting and mental health concerns

  • Research suggests steaming allows more nutrients to become available to the digestive tract.

III. RAW STARTED METHOD

  • Inspired by the raw-food movement is believed to provide a fast ‘boost’ of energy and that foods retain the most nutrients with the least amount of cooking/heating.

  • The major difference is that skips the steaming part entirely.

  • Preliminary research shows that capsules prepared with the raw start method retain more hormonal content.

  • Placenta is washed and dehydrated at 160°F for 24 hours

  • Choosing will require the client to sign a special waiver in their contract stating that they are aware that by choosing Raw Start, they have elected that their placenta not be steamed, and therefore you cannot ensure that there will be no harmful bacteria present in the final product.

WHY DO PEOPLE CONSUME THE PLACENTA?

According to research, the most common reported reasons for people to choose to consume their placentas included:

  • Improved mood (34%)

  • Nutritional support (14.2%)

  • Restore or balance hormones and nutrients (8%)

  • Improve lactation (7%)

  • Quicker recovery from birth (7%).

I. COMMON REPORTED BENEFITS:

  • Improved mood (40%)

  • Increased energy (26%)

  • Improved Lactation (15%)

  • Alleviated bleeding (7%)

II. WHAT ELSE WAS FOUND?

  • Some people experience headaches (4%)

  • Nonetheless, 69% of the people consuming their placenta in the study reported no negative effects

IN SUMMARY

75% of people reported a very positive overall experience, and therefore 98% of the people responded they would participate in placenta consumption again in the future.

PLACENTA TINCTURES

It is made with 80% proof alcohol and the benefit of creating a placenta tincture is that increases the longevity of its benefits. It is also a more potent remedy and therefore is not recommended for daily use. Finally, when stored properly, a placenta tincture can last several years.

PLACENTA BROTH

The placenta broth is prepared using the Traditional Method of steaming with medicinal herbs. In China, the broth is reserved and strained following the steaming process and ingested by the client in addition to the encapsulated placenta.

The client may drink it on its own, add it to drinks like teas or smoothies, or add to foods such as soups or chili.

Some parents choose not to ingest it but use it to water a special tree or plant that has been planted for the baby.

PLACENTA ART

I. PLACENTA PRINTS

An included service offer to placenta clients, which is a beautiful addition to your baby book, nursery, living room, or any décor.

Placenta prints can be a special process to honor the placenta in a more archival way, or even when placenta consumption is not an option (i.e., because of infection, hospital pathology, improper storage, and handling, etc.). This is a one-of-a-kind image of the organ whose sole purpose was to connect you to your child.

Prints are done on watercolor paper, and you can select:

Placenta'S Natural Color, one or more colors.

*Watercolor paint or food coloring are used separately and never touch the placenta. This is to avoid exposure to any toxins, chemicals, etc., and to preserve intact the nutrients of the client's placenta.

II. UMBILICAL CORD KEEPSAKE

Clients may request a cord keepsake (included service). Some parents chose to include them in baby books, keepsake boxes, or for ceremonial burial. For example, the umbilical heart symbolizes the loving bond between mother and child. In certain cultures, it is tradition to bury the cord as a sign to keep the child grounded throughout their life and ensure they always return home.

OTHER REPORTED BENEFITS

Research has reported both hormonal and nutritional benefits.

I. HORMONAL BENEFITS

For instance, there is the presence and concentration of 17 hormones in the human placenta processed for encapsulation and consumption.

WHAT HORMONES WERE FOUND?

Estradiol, progesterone, and allopregnanolone were the only hormones that were found at high enough levels to reach physiological effects.

Allopregnanolone: It is an active ingredient in the only FDA-approved medication for treating postpartum depression.

IN SUMMARY

The encapsulated placenta may lead to small but significant differences in hormonal profiles of people taking them compared to those taking a placebo. It may be why people reported a positive impact and benefits during postpartum. Likewise, a preliminary report on the content of 28 dried human placentas revealed a 24% US daily RDA of bioavailable heme iron in a typical daily capsule intake.

Finally, it is important to understand that placenta encapsulation does not mean we should not seek mental health treatment or therapy if we are experiencing any postpartum mood issues.

(Young et al., 2018)

II. NUTRIONAL BENEFITS

Some research found the following minerals present in placenta capsules:

I. WHAT MINERALS WERE FOUND?

For lactating women, the recommended daily intake of placenta capsules would provide, on average:

  • 24% RDA for iron

  • 7.1% RDA for selenium

  • 1.5% RDA for zin

  • 1.4% RDA for copper.

  • Others: Manganese (0.1% Al) and Molybdenum (0.2% RDA)

(Young et al., 2016)

II. WHAT ELSE WAS FOUND?

Research shows that the placenta may contain more iron than beef. In fact, in the study, the average iron concentration of placenta capsules was .664 mg/g, and 24% of the US Recommended Daily Allowance compared with the beef placebo capsules came in at .093 mg/g. Finally, research also shows that placenta encapsulation may provide extra iron supplementation, which may have a positive impact on emotions and healing during postpartum.
